As time goes, I felt I lost my ability to use English. This is one reason that I couldn't post any postings. (I determined I use only English in this blog.) Currently I use two other blogs - http://bahnsville.tistory.com and http://subeco.tistory.com - which have Korean postings only. The first is my personal blog to posting any topics I like, but the second is a more formal one to deal with a specific topic - Sustaining Web EcoSystem. Specifically, I'm working for Daum Communications, and my workplace is GMC (Global Media Center) in Jeju. Here is a fantastic place to work, as well as to refresh my life. I don't like to live in JAM of crowd. I belong to Data Mining Team, of which mission is to improve search quality and related works. Particularly, I'll be in filtering and recommendation of information, which I have been working and intereted in for a while, and until now. I made somehow a big plan, but I ain't sure how much I will achieve it. But, I'll try for it. Many people, indeed most of so-called gurus, talk that the future is an era of knowledge. Whoever has knowledge will be the only survivor. Who has the cutting-edge knowledge (a funny thing is that knowledge = Know + L + Edge) will conquer the survivors. This may be true, but we must also prepare the futures of the future (knowledge era?). The only word I can think is 'Wisdom' -- beyond knowledge. For a while, someone who knows something will earn money. At the next, someone who knows everything will earn money. At the end, someone who not only knows everything but also integrates them will earn money. Wisdom is not just knowing everything nor simply merging them. In addition, everything does not mean just technologies or economics or other individual stuffs. It means technology, human, God, culture, economics, environment, and so-called everything in the world. Someone suggested that every enterprise must has a position called CKO (Chief Knowledge Officer) as well as CEO, CFO, CIO, COO, and so forth. By the same sense, future enterprise must have a position called CWD (Chief Wisdom Officer).

Presentation Delivery like Steve Jobs Done

BusinessWeek published an article that helps you improve your presentation as Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, does. Yes, machines will be smarter than human, but will not be smarter than machines themselves. I am always suprised by their -- futhre gurus -- surrealisitc thoughts but also disappointed by their limited thoughts... like this. The only poor who makes something better than itself is human being. We have been trying to develop a smarter and smarter machine -- robot -- both in kenetics/mechanics and in (artificial) intelligence. The future pessimist predicts the smarter machines will develop another much smarter machines, and then the smart'est' machines will govern human beings. This is the future of pessimistic human beings' society. OK, this is possible. But, the thing they have missed is that if a machine is, indeed, smart and intelligent it will not develop more intelligent machines than itself, because it [the smart machine] knows the smarter machines will destroy/govern the "old-fashioned" creator machine itself by the same course of the tech pessimists. Therefore the smartest machine is no more intelligent than human beings. But, as I metioned, human beings are poor enough to develop new gods, the new conqueror, -- intelligent machines.
I'm not ignoring the rapid advancement of computers -- both hardware and software, particularly artificial intelligence.

Discussions of Tech Predictions in 2008

No comments on my own tech prediction for 2008.
Visit http://www.mahalo.com/2008_Technology_Predictions What's NeXT?

In the last posting, I posted my recent works and thoughts and so on. Last a few days I have felt I encountered a wall that prevents me from keeping going forward. I had many ideas about research works worthy enough to write papers. But, from my naive implementations and experiments, they are proven not worthy spending time on them. Such dishearted feelings may be a natural process of my life, and of yours as well. I'm accepting that, but also I'm tired. I'm exhausted. Research works are the only things I can do now and what I'm best. They are only things that make me feel alive. I have spent much time in a variety of topics, at least, after my MS entrance. In the undergraduate course, I'm a person having no thinking. I also critize them for the same reason. At first, as my lab -- manufacturing systems integration -- I studied about manufacturing systems including the lowest level of NC code to somehow high level automation and integration, and intelligence, and so forth. At that time, I also spent much time on PLS stuff for LG Micron. We hated that project but it gave us many things even though we could recognize them. After that, we focused on e-business stuffs. The main reason was we participated in related projects, particularly KorBIT. We thought Interoperability would continue to feed us. I know that even now interoperability is still far away from us. Before my US life, I was novice in research, indeed. The life in US made me changed, even though you may not recognize my changes. First, I have an eye to see something. Second, I have brain to think something different, not just new. I like 'different', but hate 'innovative', even though my mouth always keeps the word. The most important is I have a heart as others have. Yes, I also have a heart to feel. I'm a person who has no empathy with others, actually. Still, I'm such a person. But, I can say that I also have a heart. I was a narrow-sight person. During and after US life, I was focused on XML technology, especially on similarity between XML. I'm still working hard on it, but no visible outputs, because I am just thinking it. If I have an environment only to focus on it, I think I can change the ENTIRE world. However, I am not in such a good circumstance. I could graduate with the XML similarity. The dissertation is not good. It cannot satisfy me. I am never satisfied with it. If I can go back to 4 or 5 years, I can make a surprising thing. After graduation, so-called Dr. Jeong, I was concentrated on data mining. For the long research records on XML, at first, I also studied data mining for XML. It was a natural progress. At that time, I knew semi-supervised learning and kernel methods. They fed me for a while. Perhaps, until now. From text mining, especially VSM, I found the possibility to apply it to recommender systems. But, there were already many works done in recommender systems, especially collaborative filtering. However, I could recently do something about collaborative filtering. That makes me also feel alive, but also discouraged me because no improvement is expected. But, I'm still thinking about collaborative filtering, because no one is surprisingly good enought to meet my expectation. Manufacturing system, PLS and statistical methods, B2B and interoperability and testbed, XML and similarity, semi-supervised and kernel, and collaborative filtering. This is the full track of mine. At thirty, I need another weapon to spend my energy. What's next? is the only question I always try to answer. But every time, silence only. Thank God for your silence. I always want to hear your voice, see your glory. But you never showed me through visible things, spoke me though audiable things. You always implant on my heart that I found during my lowest life time. I wanted to be honest to my life to my research works to my neighbor and to You. But, I always failed. So, I'm trying again. ... Time waits for no one, but You do.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bahnsville.blogspot.com/2008/01/diary-whats-next.html' title='Diary... The time on me was to focus on technical stuffs, so it was hard to post my ideas and thoughts on this blog. Currently issues I'm concentrating on are about Christianity, which is my primary for ever and ever, and the others are technical stuffs such collaborative filtering, which is a well-known and most famous algorithm for recommender systems, similarity measures between XML documents same as last years, and social networking as well. I'm not focusing on the technical aspects of the social networking such as AJAX or other programming stuffs, but on general aspects of it to the surrounding society and especially to economics. Particularly, on how to earn money from social networking. Today's newspaper gave an interesting article about what will happen in 2008. The most top issue is the fall of Web 2.0 --- actually Web 2.o companies due to no source to make profit from their social networking sites. The sites are attractive to many users but they never spend money for them. This is the dilemma the Web 2.0 companies face. Indeed, the concept of Web 2.0 will last for a while -- participation of volunteers. ... Collaborative filtering is the hottest issue I'm currently involving to do something -- particulary preparing scientific papers --- actually I'm ready to submit at least two written papers now, and also preparing other two or more papers on it. The next step may be to appy the algorithms I have developed on real applications. To do this, I need a big-spending project and supports from others (researchers and developers and espeically evangelitic friends), or getting into a new world -- professional job. One of the most annoying things at this time is what I will do next months or years. I msut be now an eager job hunter, but I'm tired and everything does not work as I expected. I want to be MD. USA nearby friends in Christ. ... It's terrorfying me... What's next to me?

Costy Opportunity

One of the most well-known economics terms is Opportunity Cost, which is the cost of something in terms of an opportunity forgone (and the benefits which could be received from that opportuntity), or the most valuable forgone alternative (or highest-valued option forgone), i.e., the second best alternative. An early representation of the concept of opportunity cost is the broken window fallacy illustrated by Frederic Bastiat in 1850. See details via wikipeida.

I think this 'opportuntiy cost' is one of misleading concepts. The concept of the opportunity cost seems good and right. But, until when something is done, nobody knows the exact (expected) cost or profit from alternatives. If we choose any alternative, which may not be the best one, we get invaluable benefits from it. Optimality is not on the selecting the best one at the design/decision time. We must think 'Costy Opportunity'. Every decision is worthy, and its benetif is better/more than the opportunity cost (of the best and first alternative). We get the most invaluable thing that the alternative (causing the opportunity cost) never gives.

YES, we get the OPPORTUNITY with COSTs.

Cinema Paradiso (OST Video)

One of the most, until now the Only One, favorite movies of mine -- Cinema Paradiso.

Other Ennio Morricone's
- The Ecstasy of Gold
- The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
- Finale
- Gabriel's Oboe
- And More... in Youtube

To be a Data Miner

I often mention in free talks with my friends if I can make my clock back to 13~15 years ago (high school), I take 'design' as my major, and if I can go back to 10 years ago, I take several courses in biology (life science) as a secondary major.

I spent 10+ years in industrial engineering (now, became industrial and management engineering in my university without any changes in course works about management) - BS, MS, PhD, and PostDoc also. It is not a secret my recent concern is data mining. So, I thought what is the best way to be a data miner. A critical condition is to be teen age if you are not so active and smart as your high school age. If you are still hungry about new knowledge and eager to spend another years for that new things, that is not critical.

First, take mathematics as your primary major in university.
Second, take biology as your secondary major in university. Chemistry is also good.
If you have extra time at those periods, taking several computer science courses such as data structure, algorithm, programming, etc is very useful.
Third, take computer science as your MS program, especially take course works on or labs in AI, machine learning, pattern recognition, NLP, etc.
Fourth, take electronic engineering as your PhD program, especially labs in signal processing or image processing.
This is the full course to be a data miner having both theoretical knowledge and application backgrounds. Mathematics gives you probability and statistics as well as other useful things, CS gives you programmability and AI, and also some text/web mining (i.e., NLP), biology, chemistry, and EE give you the applications on bioinformatics, cheminformatics, or signal/image processing.
An important thing is I'm not sure the next 10+ years. At this time, data mining or AI looks good. Design is also good, but everything has its own life cycle - birth grown-up death, if possible recycling.

I'm mad to be an IEr, but I can design this integrated scheme because I'm an IEr.

Network and Diversity.

Network (or Connectivity) & Diversity:

I have lots of words to talk about these words.

But, in short, keep these words in your mind. Tonight, I thought BRAND may be it. Of course, I know that BRAND is not a new concept nor used by anyone else. To reach my conclusion, you need my long thoughts.

Very very very long time ago, we are satisfied with the product which works correctly as we expected, or even just works not exactly we expected. In other word, a product of correct 'function' is the only criteria at that time.

In an industrialized world such as mass-production, people wanted cheaper ones if they equally worked. In this period, the 'price' is the constraint to decide whether to buy or not.

Last 2 or 3 decades, 'price' had no more power as before. Everyone knows Japan. Japan's success story is due to 'quality'. High quality products, best selling products. People were willing to over-pay for products of high quality.

In last decade (or a few years), the next big thing after quality has been 'design'. I think 'design' is currently the big thing for a while. Apple's success story is the typica heroic one. This trend will last at least one decade or more. However, we must keep in our mind what is the next after design? For this question, I have been considering. ... And, BRAND can be the answer at this time. My limited creativity keeps me from getting better ones.

As shown in a previous post, Marty Neumeier defined 'Brand is what they say it is, not what you say it is' in his book 'Brand Gap'. If he is correct, I think he is correct, a good brand means they think it is good, and they are willing to buy it with extra prices. Do you catch the idea? If they are eager to buy the product of a good brand, it is the hit one or best-selling one. A good brand may be the complex product of function, (price), quality, design, and so on. Making a good brand -- good feelings about something we want to advertise including ourselves -- is the next step to attain BIG things. IDENTITY is the BIG asset to everyone, including company.

You need not agree with me, but BRAND is very important even though it is not the next BIG thing.

W = H + A = C

I propose a WHAC model in this post.

Web's long vision is, possibly, machine-processible, such as Semantic Web. It can be possible when Web has a full capacity and capability to understand through a reasoning process. In other words, Web must be equipped with Web Intelligence (WI).

Researchers have been believing that Artificial Intelligence (AI) enables WI. However, the current web environment is far away from the fully-supported AI. But, it requires Human Intelligence (HI), in that people edit and upload data (text, picture, movie, etc) on web, and used by them. The machine, such as agent, currently supports them to process large-scale data (such as search or filtering).

As we have seen in Wikipedia, Blogs, Tags (Folksnomy), etc, Web makes it possible to gather individuals' knowledge, a.k.a., Collective Intelligence (CI).

In mathematically,
WI = HI + AI = CI
>> W = H + A = C (after removing the common I's)

Another intuition is W = H + A = C >> W = C >> WC (Wisdom of Crowds).

Proved.

What's Wrong in Virtual Space 2.0?

When everyone dreams Web X.0 (Wiki, Blog, etc), we must also discuss inadequate things happening on it. We may gather much evidence that Current/Next Web promises not only pink future, but also darkness. At this post, I'll show only three things -- something wrong around our Life 2.0.

1. Lack of Specialty
Wikipedia now became the ONLY source of information. (ONLY may mean 'largest') Nobody may disagree this. It has many topics discussed and volunteer expert editors involved. What I found in it is that it has many discussions, descriptions, and links to support SOFT topics. (SOFT means general and public) Of course, some topics have less descriptions yet, but many, especially followers to conspiracy, have wills to edit such SOFT topics. But, the HARD topics (such as scientific research results, algorithms, etc) have insufficient descriptions to fulfill the subscribers of them. For this reason, in a previous post, I suggested 'Vikipedia' (Vertical + Wiki + Encyclopedia), in which every volunteer scientific researchers, for example, come and add/edit their own research results. We are not the only expert on our own area.

2. Uniformity
The second is abuse from a same information source. Many newspaper articles have already reported this -- many students copy their assignments from Wikipedia, for example,; thereby being disallowed to reference it by their teachers. Democracy, especially Web Democracy, is based on the 'beautiful DIVERSITY of thoughts. We must keep human as human. Being DIVERSE makes us unique.

3. Ignorance of 'Correct' Minority Reports
The third is also from the basic principle of democracy - rule of majority. The 'collective intelligence' or 'wisdom of crowds' are correct. BUT NOT EVERY TIME. The majority may often has incorrect ideas (possibly from a wrong UNIFORM source). We need to know the majority opinions from the crowds, but we MUST NOT ignore the minority opinions. Leave the possibility -- minority's correctness and majority's wrongness. We MUST open our eyes and ears. Being OPEN is the spirit of VS 2.0.

Let's discuss further for better VS 3.0.

Summer

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_9lmxCui_kIY/Rq1Pf2eFa0I/AAAAAAAAAC0/Z2Q85hnxO7Q/s320/ssfws.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5092814162242136898" />

Summer @ Spring Summer Fall Winter and Spring

Semantic Web May Be in a Wrong Direction???

People say 'Semantic Web' will be the next Web platform, as we call Web 2.0 at present. Some of them sometimes declare Semantic Web is Web 3.0. I can't agree on it. We can imagine the next web platform, namely Web 3.0 possibly, and, after several periods of web evolutions, also the era of Semantic Web; but, the equality is not. Web 3.0 is a result of the (natural) evolution of web, as Web 2.0 was, while Semantic Web must be the result of our willingness to achieve. Here is the problem. What, if our willingness is incorrect? Even though my main research topic is Semantic Web, at this time I must criticize it before further progress. Web, both 1.0 and 2.0 and next ones, is the result of general people -- not of a few genius, even though a few persons, including Tim Berners-Lee, did great jobs to enable them. 'General' means easy, simple, ubiquitous, cheap, etc. However, Semantic Web is not easy, not simple, not yet ubiquitous, not cheap, etc. For a tiny datum, it possibly requires too much meta-data describing the datum. The meta-data is too complicatedly structured such as in RDF, DAML(S), OWL(S), etc. Who exactly knows the grammars of such ontology languages. Of course, we imagine the world interpreted by a machine, a.k.a., intelligent agent, including ontology editor and reasoner. Eventually, we will make such an intelligent agent and platform for everyone. This is 'eventually', not right now or near future. The pink-light vision of Semantic Web may blind our eyes to see and halt our brain to think. As Web 1.0/2.0 was succeeded via the participations of general people, at least mainstream companies, Semantic Web must involve such enthusiastic supports from many many many, if possible all of, people in the world. The approach must be easy and simple. We must gradually approach to come the dream true. Web 3.0 may not be Semantic Web, but I imagine Web 10.0 will be Semantic Web.

People in a Row

<img style="display:block; Last week, I read a survey paper about clustering algorithms. Although a few survey papers about clustering algorithms are avabile - either long or short, it is a "recent", good, and extensive one. The important point is 'recent'. It was published at May 2005. However, the original submission date was May 2003. I think the first work was started at least 6 months (or 1 year) before its submission. The paper may include references published during the review/revision period (2003 to 2005); however, most of the references are published before 2003. This is the clue. No paper can extensively and broadly contain all the recent works. At this point, the 'wikipedia' may be helpful. Yes, let's use 'collective intelligence' here again. Wikipedia is very excellent -- timely updates and broad topics; but too broad to focus on a particular topic. Therefore, I suggest 'vikipedia' -- wikipedia for a vertical domain. .. For example, a viki page for clustering algorithms has descriptions about clustering such as introduction, concept, history, applications, available tools and implementations (including both commercial ones and open sources), sample data sets, references and/or hyperlinks, etc. I think, this can make quite an impact on the advances of associated (vertical) researches.

The Brand Gap Slides

From SlideShare, and thank Carr Reynolds for letting me know that great slide.

Business Idea: Free Advertising.

Most well-known Internet-based companies earn money from advertisement - both companies and individuals. For convinience, let's focus on Google. Google sells keywords, aka AdWords, to companies which want to advertise themselves or their products with such keywords. For simple keywords, most of which is just a 'term' or a well-known 'two or three words phrase', Google may display lots of links associated with those keywords. However, when we typed a longer phrase or a complete sentence, the page seldom has a advertisement link at all. This is the beginning of this post. What happen if we can get one or two keywords from the sentence typed and then diplay advertisement links associated with the extracted keywords. (This is only when there is no link associated with the sentence.) For long-term partnership, how about offerring such reasoned links for free or at least with cheaper cost? ... For example, if you typed 'kernel', Google will display 'QNX ...' advertisement. However, if you typed 'kernel os', then Google has no ad for that. In this case, if Google offer the same ad 'QNX...' for 'kernel os' with cheaper cost or for free... And, another way is to use 'context search' for such a no-ad case. For example, the resulting page for 'kernel os' provides the context for some ads -- possibly they are related with 'kernel' and/or 'os' or other keywords the most appearances in the resulting page. If the typed search query is long such as a sentence, the query can be also a context for ad.

We See WHAT We See

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_9lmxCui_kIY/RmEBaR9iruI/AAAAAAAAABs/61NZOQLdiQc/s400/wswws.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071336206405644002" />

We see only what we see.
We hear only what we hear.

This is not truth, but wisdom.

We can see what we are willing to see.
We can hear what we are willing to hear.

We can do what we are willing to do.

Business Idea: Why People Use Search?

This question is not for getting the obvious answer 'to find/obtain something they want'. Most of the major companies related to Search provide the list of top searches/hits of the day, of the week, of the month, and so forth. Whenever I see such lists, I wonder that why people want to search those keywords. With such curiosity, I also tried to type those keywords to get the answer. But, in the most cases I seldom get or found an appropriate answer. ... Why don't the search engine companies privde the reasons of those top rated keywords? In Korea, many keywords are due to an actor/actress's words or situations in TV shows. No one can knows why the keywords appear unless he/she watched it. The companies can provide a special page for anonymous to write down the reasons. ... One thing I have recently concerned is 'collective intelligence'. Answering the reason is also using collective intelligece. Particularly in Korea, I think, there are many volunteers to do that. No more top list except reasons. ... Indeed, they are about Riemann hypothesis, because researches on the prime number ultimately converge to it. A successful commercilization of it is of the encryption. Mathematics will make a quite impact on industry. Anyway, one of the books reminds me that Fourier can also make a quite impact on music industry. So far as we know, MP3 is the most widely used format for music in this Internet era. By Fourier, any function can be represented in a combination of other functions - espeically sine curves -- Fourier transformation. Yes, if we can represent a music in a combination of various sine curve, then the total amount of the resulting file will be dramatically reduced, because the resulting file may only contain a list of parameters for sine functions in ascii. I can't image the situation after its success. Terribly poor. But, I wish some day I'll write a book for my feelings, wisdom, experience, whatever else. As an engineer, I have written a few papers, which are not so good but gave me another title from Mr. to Dr. A paper is a container of knolwedge, I think. From very raw data, we extract patterns, so-called infomration, then publicly express them via paper publication. The expressed and collected pieces of information can be called as knowledge. Yes, I have been working to make knowledge from data. However, I wish to express my feelings, experiences, and ideas, which may not be knowledge to be published. I named those things as widsom. Why I want to write book(s) is it is a container for widsom. All of the people around me know that I'm not talkative. Usually, I make less than 100 words in a day. That does not mean that I don't like to speak or I have nothing to speak. Actually, I have many things to talk and want to express myself as I am. Why I am attached to this blog -- anonymous web pages -- is partialy due to such a desire. Not to prepare my writing skill nor to collection stories to fill my books if I'll. Just to express myself to everybody. I know. Nobody read these messages. But, I don't care. I don't expect you read this, but I just write my feelings, what I thought. That's all. ... Anyway, one day I am a writer. I'll have my books on my shelter. My widsom will be near me. Yeah, the mission is set. ... I'm a writer.

A Simple Business Idea: A Smart Music Player

Someone might already implement and/or get a patent of this idea, so that I was hesitate to write this. But, if not, you are the one to do this. An uncompressed song requires about 40 MB, but it becomes around 4 to 10 MB according to the compression rate. This is the underlying idea of MP3. The compression means cutting-off very very important information from the original source. This may not mean to a dummy listener like me, but definitely means experts (or protuers). I'm OK with the compressed song requiring smaller space. But, I'm not OK the quality of those compressed songs. Why not interpolate the cut-off part of them by a music player (both hardware and software). This may a problem of semi-supervised learning or not. By a simple regression, we can interpolate the plat part (no peak by cutting-off) with previous information (gradually increasing/decreasing). The interpolation must be applied to both sides -- increasing part and decreasing part, or vice versa. I want to call this 'software interpolation/restoration', because the music is interpolated or restored by software, when it is running. That results in the music file is still compressed but the live listening is no more compressed. I'm not an expert on sound signal.. so I don't know how to extract the sound signal. This means that I have the idea but I will no more implement it. So, you are the one. Make it as your idea. Or, apply it to your business if you have concerns.

Research Ideas: Brain Inspires Me Again.

As a scientific researcher (my recent concern is data mining and machine learning), brain may make a quantum jump in that field. Traditionally, the brain/nerve system inspired the neural networks. As it did, it can do it again in different ways. It is well known that human brain consists of two spheres -- right brain and left brain. Roughly speaking, intelligence things come from the left and emontional things from the right. In addition, the right views a thing in an integrated manner, while the left views the same thing very specifically. The different functionality makes human see both every tree and whole trees. This property is useful to make an intelligent machine learning algorithm for various applications. We may make two different classifiers, for short, one predicts the general trend whereas the other predicts the specific variations. And then, by ensembling them, we may get a more accurate classifier. Take the stock market prediction for example. (I know that it is nearly impossible to predict long-term stock price.) One classifier just catches the long-term trend and the other catches the short-term fluctuation. The ensemble classifier may get a right decision. Another example can be taken from seasonal market share data -- yearly share may gradually increase but the seasonal factor makes the share fluctuated. In this case, one classifier is responsible for the yearly increase while the other is for the seasonal fluctuaion.

In addition, one brain can interference with others. For instance, if a person feels sad, then other persons in the same room also feel sad. This idea can also be applied to improve or design a new machine learning algorithm. Interference machine... sounds good.

Business Ideas: Personal Advertisement System

I'm not sure that the similar idea to this post is already applied in the buness world. In my personal homepage, I listed and linked some books from Amazon.com. That makes me write right now. If someone clicks one of my links and buys it from Amazon.com, then it is a reasonable thought that Amazon.com returns a little portion of its profit to the homepage owner who advertises it. This is a sort of the PPP (pay-per-purchase). In my opinion, the personal recommendations in his/her own personal web site may be more strong recommendations than those in Amazon.com by anonymous readers. The profit must be shared with the willing advertisers. By that means, both parties are benefitial. The advertiser (for example, Amazon.com) has (much more) virtual market places out of its own place having strong recommendations and marketing power -- the eager and active Evangelist. The opposite party is trivial. To the end, there must be special type of 'url' such as "http://advertiser/path/show?product=xxx&linkedfrom='bahn'& ...".

I think this idea can be applied to other companies such as google.com and yahoo.com. They can make a advertisement link for a certain 'product', as well as they did for advertisers (company, organization, web site, etc). This is the case that someone types a specific product name in the search field. He/she is possibly willing to buy the item. ... Alas, my poor English...

Don't Make Me an Idiot -- the Creativity Killer.

I found an exciting article from http://www.designtaxi.com/features.jsp (and, http://www.changethis.com) or elsewhere -- "100 Ways to Kill a Concept" originally written by Michael Iva. Very interesting, but . . .
45. I understand, but . . .
46. I love it, but . . .
47. Great idea, but . . .
48. Yes, but . . .
49. Sounds simple, but . . .
50. But . . .
51. It’s just not for us.
52. Try again.
53. That sucks.
54. Needs more pizzazz!
55. I don’t like it.
56. Have you thought it through?
57. It won’t sell.
58. Maybe next time.
59. Another day.
60. What are people going to say?
61. People will think we’re nuts!
62. That’s BS.
63. Be realistic.
64. How about this instead?
65. Get a grip!
66. Are you serious?
67. That turns me off!
68. The client is too liberal for that.
69. The client is too conservative for that.
70. What else do you have?
71. So!
72. So what?
73. Oh . . .
74. Oh?
75. Oh, really!
76. Get real, it’s not feasible.
77. Sounds crazy!
78. Nobody does that.
79. Are you kidding me?
80. That’s too off the wall.
81. You can’t argue with success.
82. You can’t fight City Hall.
83. We don’t have time to do it.
84. Let’s not reach beyond our grasp.
85. We’re overextended already.
86. Let’s wait ‘til we see the numbers.
87. You’re proposing what?
88. Let’s not rock the boat.
89. Silence.
90. Laughter.
91. Boos.
92. Where did that come from?
93. I’ve got a better idea.
94. Hey, there’s a recession going on.
95. We’ve never done anything like that.
96. The press will kill us.
97. That’s not your decision to make.
98. We’ll step on too many toes.
99. Just leave it to me; I’ll take care of it.
100. You could lose your job for that . . .
---
Again, check the original source. I'm just a connector to that.

Business & Research Idea: Search Extension

In a previous post, I suggested an idea to cluster search results (either run-time or pre-compiled). Today's thought is derived from that idea, for run-time clustering. Indeed, this is not a clustering approach, but may give the same (or at least similar) results, I guess. I wanted to name this as 'parallel search', but this name is already used for performing the same search in multiple machines.
My idea is to search a keyword with derived terms. Take 'kernel' again for this idea. As mentioned, 'kernel' may mean 'kernel machine' and 'kernel for OS'. So, if one typed 'kernel', then the search engine try to find both searches 'kernel & machine' and 'kernel & OS', as well as 'kernel' itself. The 'Kernel' itself shows the entire search results, but the derived individual may show part of the results for 'kernel'. In other words, the derived/extended search gives one of the clusters for 'kernel'. I think, this idea can also be called as 'parallel search' because we may execute multiple, but different' operations simultaneously.

Proof of Existence

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_9lmxCui_kIY/Rdy_48Ba0nI/AAAAAAAAABM/Z9HM2W9Orkk/s320/lisbonproof.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5034109468399030898" />

Purposeless trips to Europe no more mean to me. The sum of those responses represents one's credit level. This is useful for preventing fraud - both seller and buyer. In addition, PageRank is one of the most famouse computer algorithms in the Internet Era (or maybe in the computer history) due to the popularity of Google.com. I got an idea that if we merge both systems above. For example, if one who has a higher credit level and he/she positively responses to other seller/buyer, then the seller/buyer may get more value (e.g., +2,.. depending on the credit level of the scorer) than +1. The negative response also works in the same way. The credit level must be computed in a recursive way. This may be a burden, but, in my opinion, gives a better system for estimating one's credit level.

Let me know if you need more discussions.

Business & Research Idea: Traffic-driven Real-time Navigation

The idea described in this post was born in 2003. Today, many companies provide map & driving guide services, e.g., google maps, mapqeust, yahoo maps, etc. I think most of the search engine-based portals offer the same (or somehow advanced and customized) service. What I feel from those services is they are static. For example, the driving path is suggested based on the shortest path or highway-biased path. The shortest path or highway can be the fastest path, but not always true. We must consider other factors such as traffic zam, weather (for long driving distance), slope and downhill, etc. In addition, the driving path must also take into consideration about the economic path and/or convinience for driving - for example, the number of rest areas, gas prices over the driving path, local taxes attached, and so forth. For tourists, attractive landscapes are also one of the most important factors to decide the driving path.

I started the idea from using on-line (or 'averaged' historical) traffic information to determine the driving path to reduce the driving time. The shortest path is not the fastest path. (But as described, other factors are also important to different users.)

I thought what if we use simulation to get the shortest, fastest, most economic, most attractive, most convinient, etc driving path. Particularly, some algorithms such as multi-pass simulation and OCBA may help for that problem. Sorry for that, I don't have enough time and space to realize this idea. Hopefully, I wish some of you who are interested in to realize it for research or for commercial.

I'm willing to help you if you want to discuss this idea further.

Business & Research Idea: VSM inspires Recommendation System Design

Recently, I have much concerns on text mining. This helps me know much about text mining techniques, especially, VSM (vector space model). Its long history (about 35 years) makes me hard to improve the original VSM technique. But, VSM gave me another chance to apply it to other applications than text mining. The application in my mind is to design and develop a purchase/buying recommendation system (a.k.a., collaborative filtering) based on the shopping patterns as well as one's preferences.

I thoght VSM is the ideal matrix necessary for capturing customer-product relationship. The row is about customers and the columns is about product. If one customer boughts a particular product in past, the corresponding element must be filled with a number (larger than zero). Otherwise, it still remains zero. We can analyze the matrix using traditional data mining technique or using recent kernel method (i.e., kernel matrix or kernelizing). There are many possible ways to fill each element. A binary model is to assign ones or zeros based on the purchase. A real valued model can have other ways - time, number of purchases, user scores, etc. In addition, grouping is the way to make the approach more efficient and more practical for most applications (e.g., food, cloth). (The original idea is best to discrite items such as book, music, etc).

If you wish to know more about this idea, let me know. I'm willing to discuss it.

Business Idea: Clustering matters to Search.

It is hard for me, and possibly all of you, to deny the search technology, particularly on the Internet, has been dramatically advanced. However, I feel it is not necessary yet. Traditional data mining techniques can help for NeXT Internet search. One of disappointed to Search Engine, including Google and Yahoo, and whatever else, is that the returned results are spaghetti. Not only too much results returned, but also not sorted at all.

Therefore, I suggest to use clustering techniques to improve the visualization of the search results. The clustering may be done in on-line among the returned results or done by off-line among the whole indexed stored in the back-end data center. No matter which approach is used, the clustering technique will help to sort and organize the returned results significantly. The first page after searching may be the same as the current one. But, we can have more options to select the category which we want to find. This approach is somehow to merge technologies (e.g., computing tech, artificial intelligence) with human intelligence. The first page has a panel which contains some categories that separates the topics returned. For example, if we typed 'kernel' in the search field, then the category may include 'kernel machine' in data mining, 'computer kernel' in computer OS/science, etc. By clicking the 'kernel machine', we can only obtain the results associated with 'kernel machine/method', while we get articles about linux kernels by clicking the 'computer kernel'. Each category may has sub-categories, for example, the 'kernel machine' may have 'support vector machine', 'string kernel', etc.

Today's computer wants to be like human. I think Google.com also wishes to achieve this goal. The result pages must be automatically generated by computers themselves, without human intervention. However, the best way to know human's intention is to ask them what they want. Using clustering is not the best way to ask such questions, but that is an efficient and feasible way for that purpose. Until now, AI definitely failed to achieve the original vision and objectives. The merging of human intelligence (HI) with AI may realize the original and revised vision if AI alone cannot.

Readers may further be required knowledge about XML, Kernel method, semantic similarity, web content mining, etc. If anyone wants more ideas about this topic or to contact me, let me know. I'm eager to discuss about this.

Barcelona in today not in history

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_9lmxCui_kIY/RatsHFZu6uI/AAAAAAAAABA/ltLCnUUTWic/s320/barcelona.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5020225078599543522" />

Barcelona at a glance. Read his new book 'Mind Set' written by John Naisbitt. See the Present and Prepare the Future.

Follows are his mind sets to predict our future, each of which is a chapter title:
1. While many things change, most things remain constant
2. The future is embedded in the present
3. Focus on the score of the game
4. Understanding how powerful it is not to have to be right
5. See the future as a picture puzzle
6. Don't get so far ahead of the parade that people don't know you're in it
7. Resistance to change falls if benefits are real
8. Things that we expect to happen always happen more slowly
9. You don't get results by solving problems but by exploiting opportunities
10. This script is not about Jim Collins' book, but about Creative Idea. However, he stated 'Good is the Enemy of Great'. Why do we satisfy 'Good'?

People often think a creative idea is an innovative one. This may, in my opinion, make them stay 'Good', because Innovation is not usual. Creative thinking is thinking differently. Difference is the key towards Creativity. If difference has a real value and power to many, it becomes innovative, but still creative.

No pressure to be innovative, but free to be different.

Success is a journey and not a destiny (Arthur Ashe)

Failure is an event and not a person

Beyond the Border

<img style="FLOAT: left; 'A Whole New Mind' by Daniel H. Pink

It is better to re-direct Garr Reynolds's blog that introduces the book titled 'A Whole New Mind'. In addition to the introduction, he also shows us how to apply the concepts in the book to presentation. (The blog is one of my favorite ones to frequently visit, because it provides invaluable best practices in presentation. So, I want all of you to put the blog in your bookmark and to visit it to read the previous articles. Don't stop visiting the blog for the while it exists.)

The book written by Daniel Pink shows us six new minds for us to survive new competing environment. He introduces three critical factors (Abundance, Asia, and Automation) why the old minded people become less important at present and in the future. As an Asian, the second 'Asia' is not a good word to me, it should be replaced with 'Outsourcing'. Anyway, the old minded people, so-called left-brainers, are characterized as functional and logical. Such people were money-earner in the high-technology era. However, the future according to Pink is high-concept and high-touch era. It is true the high-technology (by left-brainers) will be still important. But, it will become a normal factor, not the critical factor in the future. One must be more sensitive to survive. ... As you know the left-brain plays the role of logical thinking, while the right-brain does the role of emotion. The future along with high technology requires people possessing high concepts and high touches. To be a person of high-concept and high-touch, the author suggests us to have new attitude to works -- design, stroy, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning. Such things are often govened by the right brain. However, the most important thing is to develop both brains hormonically. A balanced life to us.

Go to a bookstore, online or offline, pick the book, read it, and change your mind and your attitude. As Zig Ziglar said, 'It is your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude'.

Choices That Change Lives

"Choices That Change Lives" by Hal Urban

Our life is a sequence of endless choices -- yes or not, go or stay, and so forth. I don't want to be a perfect person. But I want to try to do good things not only for myself but also for my neighbors. This is one of my missions in this world, I think. Here is a good self-disciplinary book written by Hal Urban. At first, I read his other book titled 'Positive Words, Powerful Results: Simple Ways to Honor, Affirm, and Celebrate Life', so this is my second time to read his book. He introduces 15 ways for ourselves to find more purpose, meaning, and joy prepared for us -- by the Grace of God. I like his experience and wisdom. I also hope to share my experience and wisdom in future with others. So now is the time to prepare my life -- by just following much wisdom from my fathers. ... Anyway, the 15 items he lists may be universal or not. Nonetheless, they are worthy for us to read and practice. The items include humility, patience, empathy, giving, forgiveness, thinking, possibility, renewal, courage, excellence, mission, scripture, prayer, wisdom, and joy. They are not the only things we must to practice for our own future. They may be hard for us, including myself, to practice. But daily practice and remining may change our lives little by little. When I am old, I hope to be such a man. Even though I may not be a perpect one, but I wish to be a person who continuously practices such things. Choices are on us. And that change our lives.

THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING

The Year of Magical Thinking... by Joan Didion.

Loss of things is a painful thing to human being. When the things are what we loved, the pain is deeper and deeper as we are never remove the feelings from us. What happen, if the things are another human being -- child, parent, husband or wife, friends, brother or sister, etc? Here is a woman who lost her husband just one year ago. Now she is in another threat to the same, or more painful, feeling to lose another lover -- her only daughter (who indeed left her no sooner than she thought her feelings of the year.) No other description... about the book and more about her feeling. When I was reading it, I was filled with a thought... decrease of things to lose is much and much more painful than the loss itself. If you have just one you love -- but eventually you will lose it --, you have to thank to God for you have it. The number is not the matter on this. ... The traditional enterprises, usually manufacturing-oriented enterprises, focused on how to reduce/save the costs during manufacturing. However, the costs saving has a limit to save. If one requires '100' to manufacture, the maximum saving does not exceed '100'. Now is time to create value, not to reduce costs (even though costs saving is an essential part of management). The value creation has no limit to reach. For the same example, one may create value '101', other '1000', other '10000', and so forth. The change of thought (or a creative/innovative viewpoint) opens boundless possibility to future.

ISL Logo

Logo, for Postech Systems Integration and Interoperation Lab, is designed by Bahn (bjeong@postech.ac.kr)...
