The Year of Magical Thinking... by Joan Didion.
Loss of things is a painful thing to human being. When the things are what we loved, the pain is deeper and deeper as we are never remove the feelings from us. What happen, if the things are another human being -- child, parent, husband or wife, friends, brother or sister, etc? Here is a woman who lost her husband just one year ago. Now she is in another threat to the same, or more painful, feeling to lose another lover -- her only daughter (who indeed left her no sooner than she thought her feelings of the year.) No other description... about the book and more about her feeling. When I was reading it, I was filled with a thought... decrease of things to lose is much and much more painful than the loss itself. If you have just one you love -- but eventually you will lose it --, you have to thank to God for you have it. The number is not the matter on this. ... God made us on purpose and God also give us pain on purpose.
